Frederic Luce, 'Le Fumeur', Oil Painting on Canvas, midcentury
A midcentury oil painting on canvas by French artist Frederic Luce (1896-1974), son of renowned impression painter Maximilien Luce. On an abstract background, this portrait renders beautifully the attentive expression of the model. The features of his face are emphasised with elongated and expressive brushstrokes, while characterful details from the hair to the pipe he is smoking add realism to this portrait. An earthy palette of browns and ochres highlights the shape and different hues of the face, adding dynamism and contrasting with the light blue of the shirt and of his eyes.
Signed at the front and newly fitted in a painted wood frame, this portrait has a unique presence.
