Our collection of antique plates for sale includes an extensive collection of French antique plates and we specialise in 18th-century Nevers faience (tin-glazed earthenware). With characterful French country decors that depict rural life in 18th-century France, our stock showcases hand painted plates with fruits, birds, animals, follies, and landscapes. Loose brushstrokes, expert yet painterly lines, and a clever choice of original subjects made Nevers popular in the late 18th century, continuing today. These rare plates are an invaluable part of any collection of antique plates.
Alongside Nevers, we source French antique plates from Rouen, with ornate polychrome decors in the Rococo taste as well as Sinceny and La Rochelle, with elegant floral decors in rich colours. With their distinctive palette of pink and green, our inventory includes a curated selection of floral antique plates with Eastern France. Specialised in Les Islettes, Saint-Clément, and Lunéville, we are particularly fond of the lush brushstrokes of the generous peonies, carnations, and roses that adorn these decorative dinner plates. The basket of flowers and the rooster that is often perched on it are also typical of Eastern France faience and brilliantly used in French country decor. With a refreshing palette of pink and greens, they are perfect in rooms where these colours are used or as an attractive addition to a wall painted in neutrals.

A mid-18th-century French faience plate from Marseille, c. 1760, decorated with a bouquet of roses in manganese and yellow, surrounded by wild flowers and foliage. The edge is delicately shaped and highlighted by an orange line, while the lip is decorated with sprays of wildflowers and foliage. The blooming flowers are rendered in exquisite, naturalistic detail, adding botanical interest. Vibrant colours and soft brushwork create an elegant painterly effect, while the off-centre placement of the main bouquet introduces movement, the remaining flowers scattered gracefully across the lip.
The manganese rose decor was invented in Marseille by Joseph II Fauchier in the mid-18th century, its scattered florals in refined colours gaining particular popularity in the South of France.
