Gilbert Pastor, Still Life with Jug, Oil Painting on Board, midcentury
A midcentury oil painting on wood panel by French painter Gilbert Pastor (1932-2015). This gorgeous still life portrays an elegant jug with a distinctive multifaceted shape and an ornamented handle, on a folded cloth floating mysteriously in the picture. The dark palette of the work is particularly evocative, with the camaieu of browns and ochres of the background contrasting with the light greys and white of the cloth and jug, and subtle green and blue highlights on the jug.
The folds of the sculptural shape of the cloth recall the angles of the jug, creating shadows to add rhythm to the composition. Signed and stamped at the back, this enigmatic still life is mounted in an ample dark stained wood frame.
About the Artist +
Born in 1932 in Marseille, Gilbert Pastor studied at the Beaux-Arts School in the same city. A keen drawer, his work encompasses landscapes, still lifes and enigmatic domestic scenes in a distinctive dark and murky palette of colours and blended technique. His work was shown regularly in galleries in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, as well as Switzerland.
