Edmond Delescluze, Still Life with Capital, Oil Painting on Canvas, midcentury
An oil painting on canvas by Belgian artist Edmond Delescluze (1905–1993), presenting a striking still life centred on a column with a richly modelled Corinthian capital. Around it are arranged enigmatic objects—a sculpted arm, a pale greyhound and a piece of fruit on a flat plane of contrasting colour—set against a backdrop of geometric drawings, creating a subtly theatrical and surreal atmosphere.
The composition creates a captivating surrealist scene through the unexpected juxtaposition of the monumental capital, the sculptural arm and the poised greyhound. Classical inspiration is evident in the architectural fragment, the precise draughtsmanship and the attention to form, shadow and line that accentuate both the scrolls and foliage of the capital and the geometry of the figures. Rendered in a cool, restrained palette, the architectural element anchors the scene while the surrounding objects contribute to its dreamlike atmosphere.
Delescluze studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and assisted his father, Jean Delescluze, head of the set design workshop at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, later directing the studio himself from 1947 to 1959. His work spans from Art Deco to surrealism, evident here in this sophisticated, large-scale still life. Signed on the front and mounted in a substantial gilded frame, this is a rare and theatrical work, combining classical elegance with surrealist invention.
