Edouard Bernard-Toublanc, Still Life with Fruits and Mimosas, Oil Painting on Canvas, Early 20th century
An early 20th-century oil painting on canvas by French artist Edouard Bernard-Toublanc (1883-1973), depicting a still life of fruits in a basket, surrounded by ceramic pieces and a bouquet of mimosas on a table dressed with a tablecloth. A rich and vibrant palette sets the yellow of the fruits and mimosa against the blue of the ceramic pieces and the red and white of the cloth, all on an abstract background of painterly brushwork in earthy purple. The refined, balanced composition is anchored by the horizontal oval of the table, which contrasts with the vertical lines of the ceramics and basket handle, while the softly falling mimosa bouquet closes the scene.
The glazed decoration of the faience jugs is finely rendered, each with its own form, from the lidded double-handled pot to the pewter-mounted jug and the patterned jug holding the mimosa, while characterful details, from the red patterned border on the white tablecloth to the tall handle and flat shape of the fruit basket, add to the evocative atmosphere.
Signed 'Edouard Bernard-Toublanc' lower left, presented in its original painted wood frame, painted in grey and decorated with elegant scrollwork highlighted in gold. An evocative still life, with authentic colour and detail.
Born in 1883, Edouard Bernard-Toublanc was a French painter focusing on landscape and still life, active at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne in Paris. He participated in an exhibition at the Galerie Sauvage in 1920, resulting in his work being purchased for the French State Collection (CNAP).
