French Faience, Floral Lidded Butter Dish, Early 19th century
An early 19th-century French faience lidded butter dish from Northern France, of generous circular form with two handles and retaining its original lid, surmounted by a small knob. The body is decorated in red, green and blue with sprays of flowers set within scalloped reserves, alternating with a vibrant stripe pattern. Further bands of florals adorn the lid and base, while the handles and knob are accented with matching stripes throughout.
A rare and charming piece, combining functional form with vibrant colour and patterning.
