This mid-18th-century French faience dish from Moustiers, c. 1740–1760, is decorated in a harmonious camaïeu of greens with three grotesque figures. A man armed with a spear confronts a running hound within a lively landscape of bushes and flowers, surmounted by a large fantastical bird.
Of elegant oval form, the dish is finished with a delicately shaped edge. The lip is adorned with a continuous frieze of graceful flowers and foliage, contained by a fine trailing line. In excellent condition and with no restoration, a distinctive Moustiers dish with imaginative decor and refined colour.
