A pair of mid-18th-century French faience plates from Montpellier, decorated in the centre with a bouquet of roses in manganese and yellow alongside a tulip in manganese, surrounded by wild flowers and foliage. The edges are delicately shaped, the lip carrying sprays of pansies in yellow and manganese, together with further roses and wildflowers. Blooming flowers are rendered in exquisite, naturalistic detail that adds botanical interest throughout. Pale colours lend the plates a sense of lightness against a uniform white ground, while the off-centred placement of the main bouquet introduces movement, the remaining flowers scattered elegantly across the lip.
The manganese rose decor was invented in Marseille by Joseph II Fauchier in the mid-18th century, its scattered florals in refined colours gaining popularity in the South of France, and in Montpellier especially from 1755.
