French Régence Carved Wood Crested Mirror, Early 18th century
An early 18th-century French carved wood mirror in the Régence style. The frame is decorated with strapwork and foliage on a cross-hatched ground, rising to a striking openwork crest of further strapwork and foliage on a cross-hatched ground, flanked by two creatures' heads and relief flowers, topped by a seashell. The mirror features four margins and all original mercury plates and backing, with attractive foxing. The wood is of a rare, warm honey-stained finish, probably provincial in origin, its elegant, confident carving set in distinctive contrast with the honest surface and patina of the material.
A rare mirror with refined decoration and attractive materiality.
