French School, View of Auteuil, Watercolour and Gouache on Paper, Early 19th century
An early 19th-century French watercolour and gouache on paper, c. 1830, depicting the village of Auteuil seen from an elevated, panoramic viewpoint on the western outskirts of Paris. Carriages follow a tree-lined road bordering the Seine, while fields and white-walled enclosures occupy the far bank. The village unfolds in the middle distance with a church and cluster of buildings emerging between trees. In the background, an open rolling landscape underneath a clouded blue sky.
Precise, almost naïve detail in the rendering of horses, carriages and figures contrasts with the expressive freedom of the cloud formations, while documentary observation is combined with a vibrant, defined palette of blues, greens and yellows.
The work carries historical interest, depicting Auteuil, largely rural at the time, before its annexation to Paris in 1860 and the subsequent transformation of the surrounding landscape — the distant hills becoming the Bois de Boulogne at the same period. The reverse bears precise documentation of authorship and provenance: painted by Mme de Rodelighen, acquired at the estate sale of Mme Auquet at La Breteche, and remaining in the same family since 1870.
Presented in its original wood frame, in light blue and gilt that elegantly recalls the tones of the landscape. A captivating and historically significant work, with charming detail and elegant decorative presence.
